Massachusetts lets a self-employed person - a dancer working for herself, a creator, a performer - opt in to Paid Family and Medical Leave for at least three years, paying the contribution on their own earnings. In 2026 the contribution is 0.88% of earnings, and a self-employed person who opts in pays all of it. The weekly benefit is 80% of the average weekly wage up to half the state average weekly wage ($1,922.48 in 2026), plus 50% above that, up to $1,230.39 a week. Up to 20 weeks for your own illness, 12 for family leave, 26 together in a year. For 2027 the rate stays 0.88% and the top rises to $1,284.61 - update the rates below when they apply.
Once you opt in you report your earnings each quarter and pay the contribution on them. Coverage runs at least three years; you cannot leave it sooner.
