California's food handler card covers waitstaff, cooks, bussers, bartenders, hosts who handle food and anyone who pours drinks (SB 602). Each gets a card within 30 days of hire - 10 days in San Diego County - and it is good for three years. Since January 1, 2024 (SB 476) the employer pays for the card, the training and the test, pays the time spent on them, and may not make an existing card a condition of the job. Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties run their own card programs.
Sign each person onto tonight's shift. Anyone who handles food or pours and is past the deadline without a valid card is refused. Staff who never handle food or drink - door staff, security - do not need a card.
