A bank reports any day's cash over $10,000 on its own Currency Transaction Report - that is routine and harmless. What is a crime, under 31 U.S.C. 5324, is splitting cash into smaller deposits so the bank will not report it, and it is a crime even when every dollar was earned honestly. The defence is a record that shows the money went in as it came in. Count each night once, per till, the night it was taken.
A deposit is made of whole nights and comes to exactly what those nights counted - never part of a night held back, never two deposits on one day. A deposit over $10,000 is fine: the bank files its report and that is the end of it. A deposit just under $10,000 is fine too when its nights add up to it, and the nights beside it are the reason. Cash held back more than a week is flagged, because timing deposits looks like the same thing.
