Boathouse Philadelphia BIRT and Net Profits Tax
For creators and performers in Philadelphia, or paid by Philadelphia clients, on 1099s

The $100,000 exemption is gone.

Boathouse works out both Philadelphia returns - the BIRT on receipts and net income, the Net Profits Tax with 60% of the BIRT net-income portion credited against it - puts them on April 15 with the estimates that follow, and will not call either filed without a confirmation number.

Opens in this browser with an invented creator already in it. No account, no email address, nothing installed. Never holds a tax return, a Tax Center login, a bank login or a Social Security number.

The problem

Tens of thousands of freelancers, filing for the first time.

Until tax year 2024 the first $100,000 of receipts was exempt from BIRT. From tax year 2025 every business files - and an unincorporated one files the Net Profits Tax as well, with a credit between the two that is easy to miss.

No exemption

from tax year 2025 - every business files BIRT.

City of Philadelphia →
1.410 mills + 5.71%

BIRT on gross receipts and taxable net income for 2025.

City of Philadelphia →

of the BIRT net-income portion is credited against the Net Profits Tax.

City of Philadelphia →

Will not call a return filed, or a payment made, on your say-so.

Not a reminder. Filed refuses while the year's figures or rates are missing, a date inside the tax year, or no Tax Center confirmation number - and the NPT waits until that year's BIRT is filed, because its credit comes from it. A payment needs its confirmation number. Nothing is deleted. There is no override.

How it works

Two returns, one credit

Put in the year

Philadelphia receipts, net income and net profits.

See both taxes

BIRT, the NPT, and the credit between them.

File, pay, record

BIRT first, then the NPT, then the estimates - each with its confirmation number.

What it will never do

It keeps the arithmetic. Never the login.

Boathouse holds figures, dates and confirmation numbers, nothing more.

No Tax Center login. You file and pay in the Philadelphia Tax Center yourself.
It files and pays nothing. It works the numbers out and keeps the record.
No Social Security numbers.None is needed for the arithmetic.
It is not tax advice.A preparer files the returns.

Questions

The ones we actually get asked

I made under $100,000. Do I still file?

Yes. From tax year 2025 the City no longer exempts the first $100,000 - every business files BIRT.

Am I paying the same income twice?

Partly, which is why 60% of the BIRT net-income portion is credited against the Net Profits Tax. Boathouse takes it for you.

I live outside the city.

Non-residents pay NPT on profits earned in Philadelphia, at 3.43% for 2025.

Is this tax advice?

No. It is the arithmetic, the record and the gates.

What do I actually get when I pay?

The demo on this page is the whole program, running on invented records. Paying gets you a licence key — one line of text, on your screen as soon as the payment confirms: the checkout brings you back to our thank-you page, you type your business name and the key appears. Paste it into the program and from then on it keeps your own records. Until then, nothing you type into it is kept.

The key is checked inside the page, on your own machine. It never calls us, so there is still no account and nothing about your business goes anywhere. If you ever stop paying, your records stay exactly where they are, read-only, and Export still hands you every one of them.

An invented creator's $1,944.80 Net Profits Tax comes down to $163.28 once the BIRT credit is taken.
