Electa California DI Elective Coverage
For self-employed dancers, creators and performers in California

Disability cover for the self-employed. Is it worth it?

Electa checks whether you can elect California's State Disability Insurance, works out the premium on your net profit, the weekly benefit EDD's chart gives it and the leave it would take to come out ahead - then keeps every quarter's installment for the two years you commit to.

Opens in this browser with an invented dancer already in it. No account, no email address, nothing installed. Never holds a Social Security number, a medical record or a bank account.

The problem

Two calendar years is a long time to guess.

California lets the self-employed buy Disability Insurance by election - if the trade runs year-round and brings in at least $4,600 a year. Once in, you stay two full calendar years. Whether it pays off depends on your net profit and the leave you expect.

8.84%

of net profit - the 2026 premium for elective coverage, $406.64 at $4,600 or less.

California EDD →
39 weeks

of disability benefits, plus up to 8 weeks of Paid Family Leave, at up to $1,765 a week.

California EDD →
$4,600

the least net profit a year, from a trade run year-round, to be allowed to elect.

California EDD →

Will not let an installment come up short.

Not a reminder. Electing is refused under $4,600 net profit, for seasonal work, or without the two years acknowledged; cancelling before them, or after January 31, is refused. An installment is refused twice, before its quarter, or short of what was due. Rates are refused without a source. Nothing is deleted.

How it works

Work it out, elect, pay each quarter

Work it out

Your net profit and the leave you expect, against this year's rate and EDD's chart.

Elect

Knowing it runs two full calendar years.

Pay each quarter

One quarter of the year's premium, recorded.

What it will never do

It keeps the figures. Never the reasons.

Electa holds net profit and installments, nothing more.

No Social Security numbers.EDD already has it.
No medical records. Why you take leave is your business.
No bank accounts.It pays nobody.
It is not tax or legal advice.EDD is the reference.

Questions

The ones we actually get asked

I dance at clubs as an independent contractor. Can I elect?

If you clear $4,600 a year in net profit, work year-round, and most of your income is self-employment, California lets you elect. Electa checks each of those.

What if the rate changes?

It changes every year. Load the 2026 figures, or put in the new ones with their source.

Can I leave after a year?

No - you stay two full calendar years, and a cancellation goes in by January 31. Electa will not record leaving sooner.

Is this tax advice?

No. It is the arithmetic and the record.

What do I actually get when I pay?

The demo on this page is the whole program, running on invented records. Paying gets you a licence key — one line of text, on your screen as soon as the payment confirms: the checkout brings you back to our thank-you page, you type your business name and the key appears. Paste it into the program and from then on it keeps your own records. Until then, nothing you type into it is kept.

The key is checked inside the page, on your own machine. It never calls us, so there is still no account and nothing about your business goes anywhere. If you ever stop paying, your records stay exactly where they are, read-only, and Export still hands you every one of them.
