Makai Hawaii General Excise Tax
For creators, dancers and performers living or working in Hawaii

4.5% of everything you take in. Before expenses.

Makai works out Hawaii's general excise tax on your gross receipts, keeps every G-45 on its 20th - even the ones with nothing to report - reconciles the year on the G-49, and shows what coming forward late costs before it costs it.

Opens in this browser with an invented dancer already in it. No account, no email address, nothing installed. Never holds a Social Security number, a tax account login or a bank account.

The problem

It is not an income tax.

Hawaii taxes gross receipts - every fee and booking, before a single expense - at 4% plus a 0.5% county surcharge. Independent contractors owe it too. There is a return every period whether you earned anything or not, and late filing costs 5% a month.

4.5%

the state's 4% plus the 0.5% county surcharge on Oahu, Maui, Hawaii and Kauai.

Hawaii Department of Taxation →
Even at zero

a G-45 is filed for every period, with or without gross income to report.

Hawaii Department of Taxation →
$20

for the licence - services and independent contractors included.

Zenind →

Will not let a return go in short.

Not a reminder. A filing frequency your tax does not allow is refused. A G-45 is refused before its period ends, twice, without the gross receipts, or paid short of the tax and any late cost. A G-49 is refused with a period of the year not filed. Nothing is deleted.

How it works

Licence, file each period, reconcile

Licence

And the frequency your year's tax allows.

File each G-45

Gross receipts at 4.5%, by the 20th, even at zero.

Reconcile on the G-49

The year against its periods, by April 20.

What it will never do

It keeps the receipts. Never the login.

Makai holds receipts and returns, nothing more.

No Social Security numbers. The Department already has it.
No tax account logins. You file on Hawaii Tax Online yourself.
No bank accounts.It pays nobody.
It is not tax or legal advice.Hawaii's Department of Taxation is the reference.

Questions

The ones we actually get asked

I'm an independent contractor. Do I owe it?

Yes - Hawaii's general excise tax reaches services and independent contractors, on gross receipts.

I earned nothing this quarter.

File the G-45 anyway, with zeros. Makai will not let a period go missing.

Can I pass it on to my clients?

Many do. To keep your 4.5% whole, the arithmetic is 4.712% of the fee - Makai shows it.

Is this tax advice?

No. It is the arithmetic and the record.

What do I actually get when I pay?

The demo on this page is the whole program, running on invented records. Paying gets you a licence key — one line of text, on your screen as soon as the payment confirms: the checkout brings you back to our thank-you page, you type your business name and the key appears. Paste it into the program and from then on it keeps your own records. Until then, nothing you type into it is kept.

The key is checked inside the page, on your own machine. It never calls us, so there is still no account and nothing about your business goes anywhere. If you ever stop paying, your records stay exactly where they are, read-only, and Export still hands you every one of them.
